The announcement of the ‘Just Love It!’ concerts is accompanied by the release of the 2014 version of ‘擁抱’! The theme of the ‘Just Love It!’ is ‘擁抱 / Embrace’.

After 15 years, Mayday hunted down the same director who created the 1999 music video and collaborated with him to film the 2014 version. The song ‘擁抱’ is frequently linked to homosexual love and it was included with another pro-gay love song, ‘雌雄同體’ and other 2 songs, ‘明白’ and ‘愛情的模樣’ in the compilation album, ‘擁抱 – 台灣同志音樂創作2’.

I was pretty impressed by the strong support of ‘free love’ advocated by the video. The video openly portrayed various LGBT characters and illustrated some difficulties encountered by them. In the end, the video affirmed their love and showed intimate scenes of same sex couples kissing and hugging. The characters were depicted to be running a race – perhaps an allusion to the brutal ‘human race’ which is filled with obstacles. The journey to self-acceptance, the quest for equality, and the search for love without boundaries – can be a race that demands a lot of courage, determination and endurance. With this powerful (controversial) music video, Mayday’s ‘擁抱’ will probably join the rank of 張惠妹’s ‘彩虹’ as an anthem for gay love.

I was very moved by Mayday’s brave decision to support ‘free love’. As articulated by Judith Butler, gender is performative, “Gender is not something that one is, it is something one does”; it is an “act” – “doing” rather than a “being”. Heterosexuality is a “performance” enforced by a society that supports conformity and discriminates deviancy. In a sense, as explained by Butler, “Gender is a kind of imitation for which there is no original”; “it is a kind of imitation that produces the very notion of the original as an effect and consequence of the imitation itself.” Hence, “Gay identities work neither to copy nor emulate heterosexuality, but rather, to expose heterosexuality as an incessant and panicked imitation of its own naturalized idealization.” Are we not chained by the rigid definitions of gender binaries as we try to “imitate” and “perform” conventional behaviors associated to our gender roles?

Well, life is too short to be trapped by bigotry and intolerantness. Embrace who you are and who you love. Love and let love…
